Hang Drum & Handpan History to Cheaper Alternatives
to the PANArt Hang

Hang drum & Hand pan is a musical instrument that impresses the listener. Do you know why hang drum & handpan hold so much popularity till now? It can make the listener hypnotize with its unique vibe & tone! This instrument is elusive and comes from the steel drum family that emulates the traditional steel pans of the Caribbean Islands. The handpan was earlier recognized as the hang, which means hand, and it was played by hand. In other words, it can be referred to as the team used for the group of unique musical instruments with growing worldwide interest.

The heritage of this instrument originated in Bern, Switzerland, and Felix Rohner and Sabina Schårer constructed this. Felix Rohner was the first player of a musical instrument called the Trinidad Steel drum. Later, he and his business partner Sabrina Scharer established PANArt. This company is well known for creating musical instruments in 1990. They made immense growth day by day, and in the year 2001, they both officially introduced Hang in Germany.

The popularization of hang drums & hand pans has been growing since then. From then, this instrument is represented in the format of the instrument, which is known for its mysterious and beautiful tone and unique scales. However, the creators of the Indian didn't mass produce it, and because of this, it was available in a limited amount. This is because the creators thought the instrument was artistic and imaginative. They felt that this was not something that could be easily sold around.

At that time, different versions of other instruments erupted from the United States and Europe. But later, in 2007, these models were considered the handpan, not hang. If we talk about the current condition of this market, then there is a minimum amount of manufacturers available in the market. To maintain the originality, Felix and Sabrina made a policy where customers who wanted to buy this product had to submit a handwritten letter explaining why they needed it. Later in 2013, they stopped producing hang to preserve this musical instrument's value, e, and elusiveness.

Different types of Handpans

There are widely 2 types of handpans available.

Handpans

The instruments that drew their inspiration from the prototype PANArt Hang are called handpans. Each note on these instruments typically has a dimple in the center, while the bottom of the instrument usually has a Gu (hole). Though 9-note handpans are among the most frequent, handpans typically feature 7 to 12 notes.

Tongue drums

Although the tongue drum is essentially a handpan, each note is sliced into the drum in the shape of a tongue rather than having dimples. By altering the duration of the incisions or by applying load to the tongues, the creator may fine-tune the tongues. These instruments come in various shapes, sizes, and styles and are frequently less expensive.

How can you tell which handpan is best for you?

Play as many handpan performances and videos as you can. Use your common sense: What characteristics distinguish a quality handpan? It all comes down to sound quality. See the list of warning signs in the section below.

• Belief in your fingers: It's always preferable to trial before you buy if feasible. Here are the steps to take.
• Put your needs first: Numerous options are available when selecting a scale! To reduce the field, there are various things you may do. Here are some suggestions.
• Embrace your gut feeling: In the end, everything that seems too true probably is. Trying before you purchase is always the best course of action. Visit festivals, ask other handpan players, post a request for local players on forums, and/or get in touch with reputed makers to see whether you can set up a visit.

A quality handpan should be simpler to play and
understand, even for a beginner. Take your time, enjoy it, and explore it while
retaining in mind the features to search for and things to pay attention to.
You could favor a minor or major scale, such as one that is serious or sharp,
calm or peppy, bassy or bright, eastern, jazzy, bluesy, or Celtic, among
others.

How much does Handpan cost?

Even though they are handcrafted instruments, handpans are not inexpensive. 90% of handpans have a price of around $1,500 to USD 3,000. However, the instrument's extreme demand has led some to mistake it for a business opportunity. Because of this, you might encounter manufacturers that charge too much for instruments relative to the grade they provide or individuals who resell instruments for much more than they paid for them first.

In other respects, quality and price are not necessarily correlated. As a result, you may get excellent players at USD 1,500 and some subpar equipment at USD 3,000 or even more. We realize that this looks excessive, but considering what they are, how rare they are, how in demand they are, and what went into making them, they are not that pricey. We like to draw similarities while discussing money.

For instance, a high-end bespoke Paiste or rare antique Zildjian cymbal may range from $1,000 to $3,000. However, cymbals are made faster, with fewer steps, and have a single "note." The great majority of manufacturers, in my opinion, have reasonable price structures.

Demand economics ultimately drives everything; if someone is willing and eager to pay and wants something extraordinary, why not?

It's important to start by visiting the manufacturers' websites using the Maker's Directory. Because many handpans are manufactured to order, producers frequently do not list pricing on their websites, if they even have one. Instead, they prefer to personally negotiate rates with consumers, taking into account their demands, the number of notes, etc.

What should you expect to pay for such a hand pan?

Nowadays, we can find handpans featuring 20+ notes on top and bottom shells, whereas handpans typically have 8–10 notes (around the ding). That is insane, for sure!

The largest amount for both manufacturer and player is a question of preference and technicalities. Some of us prefer to keep things straightforward, while others seek to push the envelope. The mechanics of the construction, frequency, material diameter, etc., can also place restrictions on makers.

Technically speaking, the more notes you have, the more likely your instruments may have faults, cross-talk, and small imperfections. While it might seem apparent, it's important to understand that the more notes you request, the more you will pay for the extra construction and tuning labor. For each extra note, you may typically expect to pay between $50 and $100.

On the other side, having more notes gives you additional compositional and playing alternatives. To modify the atmosphere or transition from one key to another, it's usually helpful to include additional bassy sounds in contrast to the ding.

The "correct" number of notes for a novice truly relies on you and, to some extent, on your prior musical training and the amount of time available for study and experimentation.

How to buy the handpans for sale?

Contact the manufacturer

There appears to be a new handpan manufacturer every day. When you attempt to select the best option, it's thrilling but also a little perplexing. Buying a Handpan directly from the manufacturer can be laborious and time-consuming. Manufacturers typically have lengthy waiting lists and perhaps reject your application to purchase a handpan because there is little competition.

You have learned to spot quality creators and avoid some "saucepans." Some people create a long queue, so you should request to be included.

Others hold "flash sales" on their websites and/or Facebook pages. So keep up with their news. Others provide instruments for immediate purchase via an online store. Nothing could be simpler in this situation!

While they complete the already-ordered instruments, some have a "closed" waiting list. It will be essential to wait till the list is reopened. Some lists are for a year, while others are for 20 pieces, and so on. Ask them whether their technique is listed on their social page or website.

These are small details that you must look into!

• Services: Verify that they provide an after-sales service before you purchase from them.
• Returning: What should you do if your instrument becomes out of harmony in the future? Ask them whether they provide a restringing service, the fee, how to mail it back to them, and other questions you may have.
• As you get your instrument: Talk about the best method(s) to get your instrument to you securely. Shipping (by mail or courier) and self-pickup are the two major options. As follows:
Cover every aspect of shipping, including expenses and instrument damage. According to where you reside, you might just have to pay additional taxes and customs fees if they can send it to you.
